– Scripture:
Just then, a religious scholar stood up with a question to test Jesus. “Teacher, what do I need to do to get eternal life?”
He answered, “What’s written in God’s Law? How do you interpret it?” He said, “That you love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and muscle and intelligence—and that you love your neighbor as well as you do yourself.” “Good answer!” said Jesus. “Do it, and you’ll live.”
Luke 10:25-28 MSG
– Reflection:
Defining Neighbor
Waking up on a day that GOD made to continue doing the work he has for us. Notice I didn’t say that I woke up and had all these plans ready to go, but they were ruined by something. The boys and I were going to get haircuts, at the traffic light, there was a guy in the median asking for money. I no longer carry cash, so the guy asked me to roll down my window; he asked for money, but I didn’t have any on me. I had nothing to give him, but I rolled my window down. The oldest in the car said why did you roll the window down; you knew you didn’t have anything. I said; I rolled the window down to acknowledge a man sitting there. What would you have done? It is hard enough to be, let alone be, a person and have nothing too; probably everyone just sits in their cars like the person isn’t there. So even though I had nothing to give him, I did acknowledge that he was there.
Where do we go from here?
It’s a tough life not to be seen or heard. We are asked to love our neighbors but walk by those we think are always unsavory. How will you use your time going forward? It is best that we begin to concern ourselves with those around us. We are called to love our neighbor as ourselves. It is surely a frightening prospect to look at how we treat ourselves with how we treat our neighbors. Christ is calling us all out to be radical, but maybe you are not ready yet, so start small.
Our Prayer for Today
Father, thank you for the time you have given us to spend as we like, with who we like, and how we like. Thank you for impressing upon me to do more than I am comfortable with. I appreciate the life we get to walk through as a community together and the one I get to walk through only with you, Jesus. It is in your power that we will all strive to do more. In your name, we said. Amen.
