– Scripture:

Moses saw that the people were simply running wild Aaron had let them run wild, disgracing themselves before their enemies. He took up a position at the entrance to the camp and said, “Whoever is on God’s side, join me!” All the Levites stepped up. He then told them, “God’s orders, the God of Israel: ‘Strap on your swords and go to work. Crisscross the camp from one end to the other: Kill brother, friend, neighbor.’ ” The Levites carried out Moses’ orders. Three thousand of the people were killed that day. Moses said, “You confirmed your ordination today and at great cost, even killing your sons and brothers! And God has blessed you.”

– Reflection:

Moses is having a tough day. After spending time on the mountain communing with God and receiving the Ten Commandments, God sends him back down because the people are running wild. Under Aaron’s leadership, they have crafted a golden calf and are worshiping it as an idol. I can imagine a frustrated Moses storming down the mountain, muttering, “I only left them alone for a few days; how did this happen?” Moses went up the mountain to talk to God, and the people had seen all that God had done for them up to that point. While he was away, they spiraled out of control, creating a god out of gold while Moses was actually conversing with the true God. This all happened under his brother’s watch. The people had the ability to support Moses in his work, yet they failed to make the tough choices that needed to be made. When Moses breaks the calf, he asks, “Who is on Yahweh’s side?” He calls for anyone loyal to come to him. In today’s speeches, we often see a division among those who speak out. In this case, Moses just wanted to know who was for God; he wasn’t concerned about past issues. He was focused on moving forward.

Where do we go from here?

Fortunately for us, the story doesn’t end with the wandering Israelites or the Old Testament. We do not need to harm others to show our commitment, and thankfully, that is not a faith I could follow. Instead, the Prince of Peace calls us to dedicate our lives to Him. Our way to be “on God’s side” is to follow the example of Jesus, who lived on Earth demonstrating love, peace, and compassion. Let’s make the choice each day to live as Jesus did.

Our Prayer for Today

Father, Please help us to live according to your love and peace. Amen.
