Today’s Community Scripture – 9/5/2024

– Scripture:

Clear my name, God; I’ve kept an honest shop. I’ve thrown in my lot with you, God, and I’m not budging. Examine me, God, from head to foot, order your battery of tests. Make sure I’m fit inside and out So I never lose sight of your love,
But keep in step with you, never missing a beat. I don’t hang out with tricksters, I don’t pal around with thugs;
I hate that pack of gangsters, I don’t deal with double-dealers. I scrub my hands with purest soap, then join hands with the others in the great circle, dancing around your altar, God, Singing God-songs at the top of my lungs, telling God-stories. God, I love living with you; your house glows with your glory. When it’s time for spring cleaning, don’t sweep me out with the quacks and crooks, Men with bags of dirty tricks, women with purses stuffed with bribe-money. You know I’ve been aboveboard with you; now be aboveboard with me. I’m on the level with you, God; I bless you every chance I get.

                             Psalm 26:1–12 MSG

– Reflection:

               “Wow! What a self-righteous Psalmist!”

The writer of this psalm seems to be someone who praises his own righteousness and is thankful that he is not “like other people,” especially the repentant tax collector. This psalm is traditionally attributed to David, which seems hypocritical considering his indiscretions in the Bathsheba/Uriah incident. The writer’s self-righteousness also extends to his relationships with others. He states, “I do not sit with the worthless, nor do I consort with hypocrites; I hate the company of evildoers, and will not sit with the wicked.” This attitude is reminiscent of the self-righteousness exhibited by the Pharisees in the gospels. It’s challenging to know how to interpret and approach this psalm in light of these observations.

Where do we go from here?

Psalm 26 reminds us that from God’s perspective, we do not live in a world where “anything goes.” God opposes evil. Those who submit their lives to God’s sovereignty will be different from those who follow only the direction of the self. The faithful life has a particular shape, involving a daily “walk” and participation in worship to express gratitude to God and take one’s place in the proper assembly. There is a pattern to the righteous life, but the challenge is for it not to become self-righteous. Righteousness is about living in the right relationship with God and with one another. In Christ, God defines the nature of that relationship as love for God and love for neighbor. Ultimately, by God’s grace, we are called to walk in integrity in this way together.

Our Prayer for Today

Father, Grant me the eyes to see myself as you see me, Father. Show me what is not under your will in my life so that, by your grace, I may live in integrity and ultimately walk in your way. Amen.

Today’s Community Scripture – 9/4/2024

– Scripture:

God’s readiness to give and forgive is now public. Salvation’s available for everyone! We’re being shown how to turn our backs on a godless, indulgent life, and how to take on a God-filled, God-honoring life. This new life is starting right now, and is whetting our appetites for the glorious day when our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, appears. He offered himself as a sacrifice to free us from a dark, rebellious life into this good, pure life, making us a people he can be proud of, energetic in goodness.

                             Titus 2:11–14 MSG

– Reflection:

               A God Filled Life

In our hearts, God wants us to repent of our sins and turn away from our old selves. We need to trust that we can change and become new men with God’s help. It’s understandable that it’s hard to believe in a new life connected to God when we’ve been the way we are for a long time. But right here, right now, there’s a life that’s God-connected, God-filled, and God-honoring.

Where do we go from here?

The story of Jesus is considered the greatest story ever known. It depicts the collaboration between a father and son, working through the power of the Holy Spirit to accomplish extraordinary and miraculous deeds. It is a story that includes all of us. We need to have faith that Jesus can bring about change in us. This trust should motivate us to confess, repent, and obey. Can we trust in this? The answer is both yes and no. Alone, we cannot attain a new life; it is unattainable by our own efforts. Without help, we will remain unchanged until our deaths. Even though we may desire self-improvement, we will only regress. This is the frustration described by Paul: “For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate”. The simple directive to “man up” may sound appealing, but it is ineffective. We have all tried it, and it never suffices. However, with God’s assistance, we can indeed become new individuals. With His help, we can become His people, and He is eager to assist. He has been eager to help for a long time and is eager to extend to us His grace, a divine empowerment that enables us to do what is right – something that we are not capable of achieving on our own.

Our Prayer for Today

Father, we are grateful for this day and the opportunity to rejoice in it. Throughout this day, we are carrying out the tasks laid on our hearts and honoring you, Jesus. Amen.

Today’s Community Scripture – 9/2/2024

– Scripture:

‘ God told me, “Don’t say, ‘I’m only a boy.’ I’ll tell you where to go and you’ll go there. I’ll tell you what to say and you’ll say it. Don’t be afraid of a soul. I’ll be right there, looking after you.” ’s Decree.’

                              Jeremiah 1:7

– Reflection:

                No Fear

God told Jeremiah that He had set him apart before he was born, that He had called him to speak to nations, and that he would be a prophet who would impact the culture. Jeremiah, as a teenager, felt unqualified, but God assured him that He would give him the words to speak. Wherever Jeremiah went, God’s hand of favor would be on him. After making these incredible promises, God said, “Don’t be afraid of the people.” God knew that people wouldn’t understand Jeremiah and that they might not like the words of warning he was going to speak. God was saying, “Don’t let the opinions of others hold you back. Don’t let what they think or say keep you from fulfilling your purpose.”

Where do we go from here?

God is sending us the same message: “Don’t fear people. If they don’t approve of you, that shouldn’t deter you from your purpose.” The only thing that can stop you is if you allow their opinion to become more important than what God has placed in your heart.

Our Prayer for Today

Father, thank you for providing me with everything I need to fulfill my purpose, just as you did for Jeremiah. Thank you for making me enough just as I am, and for granting me your approval. I declare that I will not be afraid even if others don’t approve of me or oppose me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
